Architects, Activists, and Avengers:
The Black Panther Party 1968

Photography by Pirkle Jones and Ruth-Marion Baruch

September 1, 2012 – November  5, 2012

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 8th, 2012   5–7 pm

Amidst the vehemence of anti-war protests, civil rights marches, and the assassinations of King and Kennedy, the specter of young Black men and women standing erect in leather jackets and black berets demanding the right to bear arms and defend their communities against police brutality, ignited the consciousness of a generation and coalesced them around the principles of self-determination and community control.  It was 1968. At the height of this movement, Pirkle Jones and Ruth-Marion Baruch, world renowned photographers, dared to take their cameras inside the storm to capture the images of these “revolutionary humanists” who called themselves the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense.  Their arresting images go beyond the militancy of clenched fists and raised weapons to reveal a movement of young men and women, intent on redressing the injustices of the oppressed and creating a transformative ethos that made health care free, put education in the hands of the community, and gave poor children access to free breakfast and lunch as a matter of right.

The Hannah Project Partnership for Academic Achievement is grateful for the Pirkle Jones Foundation’s generosity in allowing us to exhibit Architects, Activists, and Avengers at a time when many of the positions that the Panther Party championed are still at play in today’s political debate and electoral politics.
